The film was originally planned quite a while ago by the four famous Japanese directors Akira Kurosawa, Keisuke Kinoshita, Masaki Kobayashi and Kon Ichikawa who worked on the script together. After the death of the first three, Kon Ichikawa finally madethis film (his 74th feature) out of that screenplay. Koji Yakusho('Shall We Dance') is Koheita, a Samurai sent to clean up a corrupt, crime-ridden town. His three predecessors have mysteriously disappeared. Given the position of the town magistrate, Koheita cultivates a reputation for being lax and corrupt himself to lure the bad guys and eliminate them all in the end. |
