Director Fukasaku Kinji ("Battle Royal" etc.), has created an awesome mixture of Japan’s two greatest stories, the Loyal 47 Ronin and the Ghost of Yotsuya. Traditionally the two stories were presented as a Kabuki double feature, billed as two sides of the same coin. Since the characters in both stories cross over into the other, they are seamlessly melded into one in director Fukasaku’s masterpiece. There is no shortage of violence here either, with brutal decapitations and gallons of blood. |
